Justice Secretary Remulla Eyes Ombudsman Role as Martires Nears Retirement

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla revealed on Monday his intention to seek the position of Ombudsman, as the current Ombudsman, Samuel Martires, is scheduled to retire on July 27.

Remulla shared that he plans to file his formal application with the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) by Friday.

“I believe I can contribute meaningfully to the role,” he told reporters during a short interview.

If chosen for the post, Remulla assured the public that the Department of Justice (DOJ) will remain in good hands during the transition.

“We’re well-structured here at the DOJ. Operations will continue smoothly while the search for my successor is underway,” he said.

The Ombudsman is a constitutionally mandated position tasked with probing and prosecuting government officials involved in alleged misconduct or corruption.

Martires, who has served as Ombudsman since 2018 and previously sat on the Supreme Court, will retire upon reaching the compulsory age limit.
