The Department of Public Works and Highways in Northern Mindanao (DPWH-10) has commenced the removal of trees in uptown Cagayan de Oro to make way for road construction and widening initiatives. A total of 103 trees are scheduled for removal.
This P70 million project spans from Barangay Balulang to Barangay Lumbia and involves adding an additional lane on each side of the existing road.
Initiated in March 2024, the project is slated for completion by January 2025. However, DPWH-10 has indicated potential delays due to various challenges, including the tree-cutting process. The agency has assured that all necessary permits have been secured from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
The road expansion aims to alleviate traffic congestion exacerbated by the growing number of businesses and residential developments in the uptown area. To cope with the construction-related traffic, the Roads and Traffic Administration (RTA) of Cagayan de Oro has implemented new traffic management strategies.
